Aquí también debemos mencionar las desventajas de la técnica del afilado en seco.
Afilar en seco significa que el material se vacía sin la utilización de un refrigerante, como por ejemplo el agua. A 2.350 - 6.900 rpm. se genera gran cantidad de calor. Y esa es una de las desventajas del afilado en seco: si el afilador no tiene experiencia, puede ocurrir que la herramienta se caliente demasiado durante el afilado – el acero se volverá azul. En esta área, el acero será frágil y se romperá especialmente rápido.

Trockenschliff bedeutet, dass Material ohne Verwendung eines Kühlmittels, wie z.B. Wasser, abgetragen wird. Dabei entsteht bei 2.350 - 6.900 U/min sehr viel Hitze. Und eben da liegt einer der Nachteile des Trockenschliffs: Einem unerfahrenem Schleifer kann es passieren, dass das Werkzeug beim Schleifen zu heiß wird – der Stahl läuft (blau) an. In diesem Bereich ist der Stahl dann spröde und bricht besonders schnell aus.
